The exhibition “Artifacts of the Medieval Church of Uzhhorod Castle” tells about interesting materials from the excavations of the church on the territory of Uzhhorod Castle.
The ruins of the castle church were investigated intermittently in 1978-1987, when during restoration work in Uzhhorod Castle a pentagonal apse with buttresses, etc. was discovered. The excavations were conducted by an archaeological expedition led by archaeologist S. I. Penyak.
Field research was resumed only in 2018 and continued in 2019, 2023. As a result, several crypts were discovered, the vaults of which were probably destroyed in the middle of the 18th century during a robbery by Austrian soldiers. The exhibition features several hundred artifacts.
Among the finds are ceramic pipes from the 17th-19th centuries, jugs, goblets, fragments of glass vessels and tiles, etc. Special attention is paid to unique rarities – sabers of the Hungarian-Polish model, signet rings, brooches, rings, medallions, coins from the 16th-17th centuries, and details of men’s and women’s clothing.
In total, more than a thousand ancient objects have been found at the site of the Church of St. George. All the found objects are being exhibited for the first time.
All of them have acquired an exhibition appearance thanks to the cooperation of archaeologists, scientific staff and restorers of the museum.
